History

Hindu University of America, started its operations on 24 Oct 1993 'Viajaya Dashami' at Orlando, Florida as an institution institute of higher education under the authorization granted by the State of Florida Commission for Independent Education. The inspiration provided by Swami Tilak around 1989 became an operational reality, providing an opportunity to seekers of Masters and Doctoral studies in several areas of Hindus/Vedic studies and its global associates.

Initially, the university operated out of temporary offices in Orlando (Florida) and then from Tarpon Springs (Florida) area. In the year 2000, the university acquired its own property of 9.7 acre property with two buildings (which served as the office, library and residence) at its current Orlando campus address. The university received an additional donation of the adjacent property of 2.5 acres from the friendly neighbors Edith and Robert Grimm. In 2004, a part of the land was cleared, onsite facilities of road and parking improved, along with other on site utilities. Two more mobile units were added, which are currently serving as the office, class rooms and library, yoga and meditation hall.

The first full time residential faculty was added beginning August 2002, another two in late 2003 and early 2004. A large number of adjunct faculty members and visiting faculty have supported the growth of the various academic programs from throughout the USA, Canada and other countries. A number of collaborative efforts with other institutions have been established to compliment the offerings of HU. The list continues to grow.

The very first extension center of HU was established in 2002 in Bangalore, India. The first batch of fourteen graduates came out of that Extension Center in December 2003. Another extension center has been added in Indore, India

A number of academic programs have been developed to meet the divergent and special needs received from students by HU. The delivery mechanism ahs been matched to meet the student convenience- like distance education, fully online education, on campus, intensives, three week end formats, extended campus instructions, week long intensives and the like. In the period 2002 to 2007, the academic activities of HU acquired global visibility and recognition. Thanks to the leadership of past presidents- Dr.Deen Dayal Khandelwal, Dr. Bhu Dev Sharma, Dr. K.C. Gupta, Dr. TRN Rao and Om Prakash Baveja, the contribution by faculty and support by staff / volunteers. Sri Abhinav Dvivedi has been a continuing strength of the HU board through all these phases of growth and transitions. The philanthropic generosity of the Patron Brahma Aggarwal and family has left an indelible mark on what HU has been in its growth service and contribution to the community. Several masters programs were put together for delivery in the areas of Hinduism, Hindu Philosophies, Yoga, Yoga Philosophy, Ayurveda, Astrology, Sanskrit and special studies. Presentations were made in several national and international important conferences and academic forums to enhance the visibility and voice of Hindu University in global academic forums.
