Jan Willem V. Van Doorn’s Master Thesis on
Master Painters in the Dutch Golden Age:
A Study on Astrological Factors of Creativity and Innovation
The study of Jyotish, Vedic Astrology, is a science dating back thousands of years. Yet, it is able to answer questions raised by modern scholars. Jan Williem V. Van Doorn, student of Hindu University of America, is one such scholar who raises an interesting question in his Master Thesis titled, Master Painters in the Dutch Golden Age: A Study on Astrological Factors of Creativity and Innovation.
Mr. Van Doorn asks, “What is it that the master painters in the Dutch Golden Age were able to do that today’s artists – even with all the current state-of-the-art technology available – are not, or hardly able to do?”
Through his studies, he looks into the Vedic astrological factors which may have been at play to generate such incredible creativity and innovation during the Dutch Golden Age based on the study of Jupiter–Saturn conjunctions during that time, individual birth charts of trendsetters, and statistical analysis of birth charts of well known painters and musicians. The thesis looks into factors related to five selected Grahas (planets), in combination with six selected Raasis (zodiacal signs), ten selected Nakshatras, (moon signs of the zodiac), and five selectres Dreshkaanas (subdivisions of the ten degrees in a Zodiacal sign.)
The conclusion of the study shows case studies of the Vedic charts of Rembrandt and other famous painters along with the founding of Holland in 1581 and the birth of Prince William of Orange pointed to the artistic strength and confluence of supporting factors at the time. The importance of the cycle of Jupiter-Saturn conjunctions for world history and this creative period in particular were highlighted. There were also interesting results relating to the study of the famous musicians of a later time period.
