in Sri Aurobindo Studies

Photo 1: Sri Aurobindo (August 15, 1872–December 5, 1950) was an Indian nationalist, scholar, poet, Hindu mystic, evolutionary philosopher, yogi and guru. His followers further believe that he was an avatar, an incarnation of the supreme being.

Photo 2:  The Mother (aka Mirra Alfassa, February 21, 1878 - November 17, 1973) – Born and raised in Paris (France), she joined Sri Aurobindo as a spiritual collaborator in 1920.  She has written widely interpreting Sri Aurobindo’s message, and continued his mission.

Hindu University of America (Orlando, USA) and Sri Aurobindo Center for Advanced Research (Pondicherry, India) have recently signed a memorandum of understanding to work together on a joint graduate studies program which will lead to Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Sri Aurobindo Studies.

In the last chapter of his classic on The Essence of Yoga, Georg Feuerstein describes:  "Sri Aurobindo...whose integral philosophy is today recognized and appreciated as a monumental synthesis of the highest cultural values of East and West.  ...  There is an immense wealth of outstanding psychological and spiritual discoveries embedded in his voluminous writings, which stand at the watershed of a new era of yogic culture."   Undoubtedly, Sri Aurobindo (1872-1950) has been one of the most inspiring spiritual leaders of the world.   Sri Aurobindo’s vision and influence on developing awareness and growth of humanity’s spiritual consciousness as a modern Rishi, yogi, and pioneer is immeasurable.  He is  the great synthesizer, bringing all under a supreme, integral  and harmonious vision wherein Eastern and Western thought find their complimentary positions; ancient and the modern both find their rightful places; the individual and the universe find their harmonious relation with each other; secular and the sacred become expressions of the same divine; science and spirituality coexist shedding light on each other; matter, life, mind and spirit all are beautifully integrated as an ever evolving _expression of divine consciousness.  His penetrating analysis of the perennial problems of existence, and suggested solutions will help the students to develop a deeper understanding of their own existence and their roles in life.

Sri Aurobindo Centre for Advanced Research (SACAR), based in Pondicherry, India, is devoted to cultivating a true and living education, a never-ending search for Truth and its progressive manifestation and creative _expression.  SACAR has been offering Distance Education as Sri Aurobindo Darshan: The University of Tomorrow (TUT) since February 2004.  As an online university, TUT seeks to utilize the best possibilities of the internet in order to provide a combination of academic excellence, clarity of spiritual knowledge, and spiritually-based perspectives on many areas of human study in an affordable and convenient manner.  In terms of content, approach, aim, and educational methods, the learning center seeks to be a true university of the future whose learners, scholars, and facilitators will discover effective, spiritually-based solutions to the difficulties besetting human existence. These solutions will address the integration of humankind’s instrumental nature (mind, life, material form) with its higher spiritual consciousness.  Currently, TUT offers an “Orientation Programme (one three-credit, 16-week course)”, a “Science of Living Programme (four three-credit, 16-week courses),” an “Academic Programme in Sri Aurobindo’s Thought (48 credits 4 semesters, though the length of time is flexible),” as well as an “Advanced Research Programme in Sri Aurobindo (72 credits 7 semesters, though the period  is flexible).”  This recent agreement with Hindu University (HU) allows students taking these programs to use the academic credits earned toward degrees to be awarded by HU.

Hindu University of America, (HU) based in Orlando (USA), is devoted to the mission of providing for learning, research and training in a broad spectrum of topics related to Vedic/Hindu culture including all aspects of spirituality, religion, philosophies, practices, etc.  The University aims to establish harmony among eastern religious thoughts and modern sciences, thereby contributing to better human understanding and global peace.  HU is authorized, by the Florida State Department of Education and the State Commission for Independent Education, to award Masters and Doctoral degrees currently in the following areas: Hinduism; Hindu Philosophies; Yoga Philosophy and Meditation; Yoga Education (Only Master’s degree); Ayurvedic Sciences (Only Master’s degree); Hindu/Vedic Astrology; Divine Music; Hindu Divinity; and Sanskrit.  HU is developing as a distance-education school which has served over 250 students distributed all over North America and throughout the world.  Master’s and doctoral degrees in Sri Aurobindo Studies are the latest addition to the portfolio of degrees, diplomas, and advanced certificates awarded by HU.
